Ivermectin for dogs: doses by goal and the gene that changes everything
It is the most-used antiparasitic molecule in the world — and the one with the worst self-medication record. This guide covers goals and dose ranges, the MDR1-sensitive breed list, overdose signs, and what the FDA's public adverse event database shows.
Information, not diagnosis. This guide is educational content reviewed by CFMV-registered veterinarians. It does not replace an in-person consultation. If your pet shows the emergency signs listed here, go to a veterinary hospital now.
🚦 Urgency triage: yellow vs red flag
🟡 Yellow flag — monitor / vet in 24-72h
- Vomiting or diarrhea after a correct dose
- Sleepiness for 12h
🔴 Red flag — emergency NOW
- Mydriasis (a dilated pupil that doesn't react)
- Tremors or seizure
- Sudden blindness
- Excessive drooling
- Difficulty rising
What it's for: each goal, a different dose
Ivermectin acts on parasites' nervous systems while sparing the dog's — as long as the dog doesn't have the door open, the MDR1 gene. Reference ranges vary enormously: monthly heartworm prevention uses doses around 0.006 mg/kg; sarcoptic mange and other infestations need much higher protocols, set by the vet in a controlled cycle. It is the distance between one drop and a whole bottle.
Range sources: veterinary labels and clinical manuals like the MSD Veterinary Manual. Dose, route and duration are the clinician's call, weighing the dog and knowing the breed.
The MDR1 gene: breeds where the standard dose is poison
The MDR1 protein pumps drugs out of the brain. In dogs with the mutation (collies, shelties, border collies, Australian shepherds, whippets, bobtails and mixed dogs of those lines), the pump fails and ivermectin enters the central nervous system: dilated pupils, drooling, tremors, blindness, coma. The heartworm-prevention dose is safe even for these dogs; the high mange doses are the real danger.
A saliva test for the MDR1 mutation exists and costs less than a hospital stay. If your dog is from those lines, test before any high-dose protocol — and tell every new vet, on the chart's alert list.
The pharmacovigilance data: 194,447 FDA reports
The FDA's public adverse event database for animal drugs holds 194,447 reports involving ivermectin — the most-reported molecule on this page. The most frequent reported reactions are lack of efficacy against worms (37,191 records against heartworm larvae and 26,113 hookworm) and vomiting (23,145).
Reading it honestly: a report does not prove causation, and popular molecules get more reports. But the inefficacy volume carries a real message: expired, poorly stored or eyeballed product fails — and the worm stays. Source: openFDA, public domain, data through 2026-07-02.
The forbidden neighbor tip: cattle injectable on a dog
- Cattle ivermectin injectable (1%, 50 ml bottle) concentrated for a 400 kg cow — one milliliter is a full dog-sized course
- Dosing by eye, without weighing the dog
- Ivermectin mixed with other antiparasitics (spinosad, moxidectin) without guidance
- High doses in MDR1 breeds
- Giving it to puppies under 6 weeks
What happens in the body
Entender o mecanismo da Ivermectin for dogs muda a decisão do tutor: saber o que piora e o que alivia transforma o dia a dia em parte do tratamento, não só a ida ao veterinário.
Na ficha clínica, Ivermectin for dogs aparece como Prescription only — mind the sensitive breeds. Guarde essa informação: ela decide entre 'marcar consulta' e 'ir agora'.
Common mistakes
- Waiting to see if it passes on its own with a sign that already lasts days
- Using leftover medicine from another pet or from human use
- Changing the treatment on your own mid-course
- Not bringing daily notes to the appointment
Measuring progress without frustration

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ivermectin used for in dogs?
Monthly heartworm prevention, sarcoptic and demodectic mange, lice and other parasitoses — each goal with its own dose range, set by the vet.
Can every breed take ivermectin?
At heartworm-prevention dose, yes — collies included. At high mange doses, no: dogs with the MDR1 gene (collie, sheltie, border, Aussie, whippet) suffer neurological toxicity. A saliva test settles it.
Can I give cattle injectable ivermectin?
Never. The cattle concentration is dozens of times the dog dose, and a fraction-of-a-ml mistake is the fastest road to neurological toxicity.
How long does ivermectin protection last?
The monthly oral prevention dose protects for about 30 days against heartworm. Mange protocols have their own duration and intervals, set by the vet.
Does ivermectin kill intestinal worms?
It works well against some (hookworms, some roundworms) but is weak against tapeworms and others — which is why the right dewormer is chosen by the diagnosed worm type, not the available bottle.
Signs of ivermectin overdose?
Mydriasis, drooling, tremors, a wobbly gait, blindness and seizure — an immediate neurological emergency, with better prognosis when care arrives in the first hours.
How severe is Ivermectin for dogs?
Ivermectin for dogs is classified as: Prescription only — mind the sensitive breeds. That rating sets how fast you need care; severe cases have no safe waiting period at home.
