Parvovirus: how to identify, treat and prevent
Resistant virus that survives 12+ months in the environment. Costs R$ 3,000-8,000 in hospitalization. This guide covers signs requiring emergency, treatment protocol and puppy protection.
π¦ Urgency triage: yellow vs red flag
π‘ Yellow flag β monitor / vet in 24-72h
- vaccinated puppy apathetic 1 day after walk
π΄ Red flag β emergency NOW
- repeated vomit / bloody diarrhea / extreme apathy in puppy
Signs requiring emergency NOW
- Repeated vomit (more than 3Γ in 6h)
- Fresh blood diarrhea, foul smell
- Severe apathy (puppy won't stand)
- Total water refusal
- Dehydration (skin doesn't bounce back)
- Pale or bluish gums
- High fever OR hypothermia
Treatment protocol (hospital)
- Immediate isolation (extreme contagion)
- Aggressive IV fluid therapy 48-72h
- Antiemetics (Ondansetron, Maropitant)
- Broad-spectrum antibiotics (Ampicillin + Metronidazole)
- Nutritional support (initial fasting + gradual reintroduction)
- Plasma or transfusion if severe anemia
- Glucose monitoring (hypoglycemia common)
Prevention β the only real defense
- DHPP vaccine at 6, 9 and 12 weeks
- Annual booster
- DO NOT walk puppy until full vaccine schedule
- Disinfect environment with bleach 1:30 (kills parvo)
- Avoid contact with unknown dogs until 4 months
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a vaccinated puppy get parvo?
Rare but possible. New strains or vaccine failure (maternal immunity interference). If vaccinated and vomiting, still go to vet β case may be milder.
Does a vaccinated adult die from parvo?
Very rare. Adult with current vaccines has robust immunity. If contracts, case is mild β vomit and lethargy for 2-3 days.
How to disinfect after parvo?
Diluted bleach 1:30, 10 min contact, all surfaces. Discard porous bedding and toys. Wait 6 months before bringing another puppy.
Will a surviving puppy have sequelae?
Most recover fully in 2-4 weeks. Small % develops food intolerance or transient immune deficit.
How much does treatment cost?
5-7 day hospitalization: R$ 3,000-8,000. Mild cases with outpatient care: R$ 800-1,500. Without treatment: 80-90% die.
