Basic puppy training: 5 commands in 30 days
Puppies have a critical socialization window between 8 and 16 weeks β what they learn during this period stays for life. Positive reinforcement training is 3x more effective than punishment, creates bond with owner and reduces adult behavioral problems.
π οΈ What you'll need
- Small soft treats (easy to chew quickly)
- Clicker (optional, but useful)
- Short leash and collar
- Calm distraction-free environment
- Lots of patience and humor
π Step by step
-
1
1. Sit (day 1-3)
Hold a treat near puppy's nose. Move hand slowly up and back β head follows, rear naturally sits.
The moment it sits, say 'SIT' + deliver treat + praise.
π‘ Do 5-10 repetitions, max 5 minutes. Stop before puppy loses interest. -
2
2. Down (day 4-7)
With puppy sitting, move treat from nose to floor between front paws. Naturally lies down.
Say 'DOWN' at moment of movement + immediate treat.
-
3
3. Stay (day 8-14)
With puppy sitting, show open palm and say 'STAY'. Wait 2 seconds, treat.
Gradually increase: 5s, 10s, 30s, 1min. Never call puppy β GO to it to reward.
π‘ If it stands up, go back one step. Never punish β just ignore and restart. -
4
4. Come (day 15-21)
Start in closed environment, no distractions. Call 'COME' + crouch + visible treat in hand.
When arrives, LOTS of praise and special treat (tastier than usual).
π‘ NEVER call puppy for scolding or unpleasant thing (bath, nail trim). Will associate 'COME' with bad. -
5
5. Leash (day 22-30)
Leave collar and leash on floor for puppy to sniff 2-3 days before use.
Put collar on 5 min a day while playing, increase gradually.
Guide walking very slowly, treat every step taken by your side without pulling.
Golden rules of positive training
- SHORT sessions: 5-10 minutes, 2-3x/day (puppy tires)
- Always end with a SUCCESS (even simple)
- Treat within 1 second of correct behavior
- Command ONCE (repeating teaches it can be ignored)
- Never physically punish or yell
- Whole family uses SAME words (sit vs sit down = confusion)
- Persistence > perfection
Common mistakes that delay learning
- Long session (+15 min) β tires and frustrates
- Delayed treat (>3 seconds) β no association
- Overly distracted environment (park at first)
- Punishment for not obeying (fear blocks learning)
- Multiple commands at same time
- Lack of consistency between family members
- Giving up after 1 week without result
Frequently Asked Questions
From what age to start?
8 weeks (after coming home) β socialization window goes until 16 weeks and is critical. Older puppies still learn, just need more patience.
Do I need to hire a trainer?
For basic commands, no. Books and tutorials suffice. Professional trainer is useful for aggressive dogs, trauma or working breeds (Shepherd, Belgian).
What if my puppy is stubborn?
Puppy isn't stubborn β bored or not understanding. Reduce session, increase treat value (cheese, liver) and verify moment isn't play/sleep time.
Does positive reinforcement work on all breeds?
Yes, scientifically proven. Dog is dog β Beagle, Golden, Pit or Poodle. Difference is only speed: some learn in 3 days, others in 10.
Puppy peed wrong, can I scold?
NO. If caught in the act, pick up and take to right spot. If discovered later, clean silently. Correct pee gets party; wrong pee is ignored.
