Hip dysplasia in dogs

Hip dysplasia is the most common hereditary orthopedic disease in medium and large dogs. It consists of a malformation of the hip joint where the femoral head does not fit perfectly into the acetabulum, causing joint laxity, chronic pain and development of arthritis. It affects both hips in most cases.

Information, not diagnosis. This guide is educational content reviewed by CFMV-registered veterinarians. It does not replace an in-person consultation. If your pet shows the emergency signs listed here, go to a veterinary hospital now.

⚠️ Important: Never ignore limping in a young dog. Dysplasia diagnosed early has infinitely more effective treatment than when discovered in the advanced arthritis phase.

🚦 Urgency triage: yellow vs red flag

🟡 Yellow flag — monitor / vet in 24-72h

  • rising difficulty / stair refusal / intermittent lameness

🔴 Red flag — emergency NOW

  • severe pain / refusal to walk / yelping on movement

Early signs (watch if your dog)

  • Has difficulty getting up after sleeping
  • Makes noise going up stairs or jumping on the sofa
  • Walks with rear end swaying (bunny hop gait)
  • Tires quickly in games that used to last hours
  • Sits abnormally (one leg stretched to the side)
  • Loses thigh muscle mass

German Shepherd20%6 months-2 years

Diagnosis

Definitive diagnosis is by X-ray under light sedation. The international gold standard is OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certification which classifies into: Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, Severe.

  • Ventrodorsal X-ray with extended hips (mandatory)
  • PennHIP method (measures early joint laxity from 4 months)
  • Manual orthopedic exam (Ortolani test)

Prevention

  • Require OFA/PennHIP certificate from parents before buying puppy
  • Maintain ideal weight throughout dog's life
  • Avoid impact exercise (stair jumping) until 12 months
  • Supplement with chondroprotectors after 5 years
  • Prefer non-slip surfaces at home

What dysplasia does to the joint

Mistakes that speed up wear

  • Keeping the animal overweight because 'it's still a puppy'
  • Impact exercise (jumping, long stairs) as the main activity
  • Smooth floors at home, forcing compensation at every step
  • Treating only when pain stops walking, when damage is already installed

Measuring progress without frustration

Se qualquer sinal regredir, o critério de retorno desta página vale: At first sign of limping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the right age for dysplasia exam?

Standard OFA X-ray: from 24 months. PennHIP: from 4 months. If the dog shows symptoms, exam immediately regardless of age.

Can a dog with dysplasia live well?

Yes. With weight control, adequate activity, supplementation and regular vet monitoring, dogs with mild to moderate dysplasia live an almost normal life.

Is surgery always necessary?

No. About 60% of cases are controlled with conservative treatment. Surgery is indicated when there is persistent pain or functional loss.

Can a puppy from dysplasia-free parents have it?

Yes, but the risk is much lower. Dysplasia has a strong genetic component but is not 100% hereditary — nutrition, exercise and weight during growth also influence.

How much does dysplasia surgery cost?

In the US, Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO): $3,000-$6,000. Total hip replacement: $6,000-$12,000 per hip. Values vary by city.

At what age does Hip dysplasia show up?

Per the clinical profile on this page, the typical onset age is 6 months to 2 years. Predisposed breeds can show signs earlier, and early screening changes the prognosis.

How severe is Hip dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is classified as: medium. That rating sets how fast you need care; severe cases have no safe waiting period at home.

When should I take my pet to the vet for Hip dysplasia?

The practical reference on this page is: At first sign of limping. If you're torn between 'watch' and 'go', go: nobody regrets checking early.
