Atopic dermatitis in dogs
Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease caused by exaggerated immune response to environmental allergens (dust, pollen, mites, fungi). It's the second most common cause of dermatological consultation in dogs, behind only mange. No cure, but with correct management the dog lives normally.
π¦ Urgency triage: yellow vs red flag
π‘ Yellow flag β monitor / vet in 24-72h
- itching on paws/ears / mild redness
π΄ Red flag β emergency NOW
- open wounds / bleeding / prostration + fever
Classic signs
- Intense itching (paws, ears, groin, armpits)
- Obsessive paw licking (brown stain)
- Redness in thin skin areas
- Recurrent ear infections
- Patchy hair loss
- Strong skin odor
- Seasonal worsening (spring/fall)
Predisposed breeds
| Breed | Estimated prevalence | Onset age |
|---|---|---|
| French Bulldog | 30% | 6-18 months |

Diagnosis
Diagnosis is clinical + exclusion. No single test β must rule out mange, food allergy, bacterial infection first.
- Skin scraping (rules out mange)
- Ear cytology (rules out bacteria/fungus)
- 8-week elimination diet
- Intradermal or serum allergy test
- Skin biopsy in doubtful cases

Frequently Asked Questions
Is atopic dermatitis curable?
No. It's a chronic management disease β but with correct treatment, the dog lives normally with little or no itching. Usually worsens at specific times of year.
My dog scratches, is it always atopy?
No. Itching can be mange, food allergy, fleas, contact with irritating product or infection. Only a veterinary dermatologist diagnoses precisely.
Does hypoallergenic food cure it?
Cures only if allergy is exclusively food-based (30% of cases). If atopic environmental, food helps but doesn't solve β needs combined treatment.
Does Apoquel have side effects?
Yes, some dogs develop vomiting, diarrhea or infections from mild immunosuppression. ALWAYS use with veterinary follow-up and semiannual exams.
Can puppies have atopic dermatitis?
Rare before 6 months. If puppy scratches a lot, first suspect sarcoptic mange, mites or food allergy.
