Neon tetra disease: what it is, why there is no cure, how to avoid it
'Neon tetra disease' (Pleistophora hyphessobryconis) is the species' nightmare: a sporozoan parasite that erases the colored stripe, pulls the fish out of the school, and has no effective treatment. It spreads through a tank when sick fish are added without quarantine or when a dead fish is left to rot and eaten.
The preventive protocol that works: a 2-3 week quarantine for every new fish, removing and discarding (never freezing to feed) any fish with a fading stripe and a bent spine, and buying from stores with clean tanks and active fish. A well-bought neon lives 5 years in a school, and it is the cheapest color show in the hobby.
