Basic care
Bearded Dragon needs a suitable environment (correct temperature, humidity and space), daily observation and a species-specific diet. Read the species natural habitat and reproduce essentials at home before bringing the animal.
Feeding fundamentals
Always consult a veterinarian specialized in exotic pets before defining the diet. Generic online lists are often wrong. Never feed human food or products meant for cats/dogs.
Common health signs
Watch for lethargy, appetite loss, skin/feather/scale/shell changes and behavior shifts. Any of these deserves a check-up with an exotic-pet vet.
The enclosure is the caretaker: heat gradient and UVB decide health
An Australian desert reptile, the bearded dragon regulates its body temperature by choosing spots in its environment. That turns the terrarium into life support: a basking surface between 38 and 42 °C, a cool zone between 22 and 26 °C, and a quality UVB lamp replaced every 6-12 months even if it still lights up (the useful spectrum decays before the light does).
Without proper UVB the body cannot fix calcium, and metabolic bone disease follows: soft jaw, trembling limbs, deforming spine. It is the species' top disease in captivity and 100% preventable. A probe thermometer and hygrometer cost less than a reptile vet visit, and they measure what a thermostat dial does not guarantee.
The beard talks: a raised arm is a greeting, a black beard is a warning
Bearded dragon behavior is easy to read once you know the vocabulary. A slowly raised and waved arm is a submissive greeting between individuals — if yours does it to you, it is saying 'I am not a threat'. An open mouth and a darkening beard is a warning: too much heat, stress or territorial defense.
Two signs demand immediate action from the owner: food refusal for more than a week outside brumation (the species' natural winter dormancy), and dragging the back half of the body, which suggests intestinal impaction — usually from swallowed loose substrate. Safe flooring (reptile carpet or paper towel for juveniles) removes the main risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bearded Dragon a good pet for beginners?
Depends on the setup you can afford and the time you can commit. Bearded Dragon lives 8-14 anos — plan for that horizon. Read this whole page and consult an exotic-pet veterinarian before adopting.
What does Bearded Dragon eat?
A species-appropriate diet formulated for its life stage. For Pogona vitticeps, always confirm with a vet — internet-generic feeding lists frequently omit key nutrients or include toxic items.
How long does Bearded Dragon live?
With correct care, 8-14 anos. Environment, diet and preventive vet visits can more than double the lifespan of a neglected animal.
What should I NOT do?
Never buy from an unknown origin (wild-caught animals suffer and it's illegal in Brazil for many species), don't release in the wild, don't share food between pets and don't use dog/cat products on Bearded Dragon.
