Puppy socialization: 3-16 week guide
The critical window doesn't come back. A poorly socialized puppy nearly always becomes a fearful or aggressive adult, and retraining is 10× harder than preventive socialization.
Socialization timeline
- 3-4 weeks: contact with mom and siblings (don't separate earlier)
- 4-8 weeks: gentle human handling (holding, soft sounds)
- 8-12 weeks: go to new home, introduce routines
- 12-16 weeks: intensify SAFE novelty exposure
- After 16 weeks: window CLOSES — reinforcement only, no formation
Checklist of 100 recommended exposures
- People: babies, children, elders, hats, beards, glasses, wheelchairs, uniforms
- Surfaces: grass, sand, tile, wood, cement, carpet, stairs
- Environments: pet shop, elevator, car, train, park, beach
- Noises: vacuum, horn, dryer, doorbell, thunder (recorded), fireworks
- Objects: umbrella, balloon, skateboard, rocking chair, guitar
- Animals: cat, other vaccinated dogs, horse, chicken (if safe)
What to AVOID (creates trauma)
- Forcing interaction when puppy shows fear
- Exposure to unknown dogs before full vaccines
- Taking to crowded pet shops without DHPP
- Letting small children handle unsupervised
- Using 'sink or swim' (throwing in the deep end to 'learn')
- Skipping socialization out of parvo fear (more dogs die from behavioral euthanasia than parvo!)
