How to teach your dog to walk without pulling
Choke, spray, sharp corrections don't teach β they just scare. This positive protocol works with all sizes in 15 min/day for 3 weeks.
Right gear
- Short leash (4-5 ft) β NO retractable during training
- H-harness (Julius-K9, Ruffwear) β never neck collar for pullers
- Treats in training pouch, ready to use
- Clicker (optional, speeds learning)
- NEVER: shock, choke, prong collars
Be-a-tree method β step by step
- 1. Start at home/yard WITHOUT distractions
- 2. Walk normally with the dog
- 3. As soon as leash tightens, STOP completely (like a tree)
- 4. DON'T pull dog back β just wait
- 5. Dog turns/slackens leash β treat + resume walking
- 6. Dog pulls again β stop again
- 7. Repeat 15 min. Then move to low-traffic sidewalk
- 8. Increase distraction gradually over 3 weeks
Mistakes that make training fail
- Continuing to walk when leash tightens (rewards pull!)
- Saying 'no, no' constantly (dog tunes it out)
- Switching gear every day (confuses dog)
- Walking a tired dog β exhausted dog still pulls by habit
- Skipping steps β must start without distraction
Frequently Asked Questions
How long to stop pulling completely?
90% of dogs in 2-3 weeks with 15 min/day consistent. Long-established habit (5+ years) may take 6-8 weeks.
Does head halter (Halti) work?
Yes, cuts pulling 80% instantly. But it's management, not teaching. Combine with be-a-tree for permanent effect.
Does the dog get frustrated when we stop?
In the first days, yes. Some vocalize or jump. Ignore. In a week, learns to associate loose leash = motion.
Can I use retractable leash later?
Yes, for leisure in open parks. But not during training β dog never learns consistency with retractable.
Large-breed dog, is it harder?
Physically yes, mentally same. Focus on consistency. Front-clip harness helps a lot with strong dogs (Rottweiler, Pit Bull).
