Pug: everything about the breed

The Pug has millennia-old Chinese origins, bred as a companion dog for the imperial nobility. It arrived in Europe via Holland in the 16th century and was adopted by British royalty. Its main feature — the flat muzzle — is the result of centuries of aesthetic selection and brought serious respiratory problems collectively called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Essential brachycephalic care

Every Pug has some degree of breathing difficulty. Recognizing the signs and adjusting the routine greatly extends the pet's life.

  • Never walk in hot hours (11am-4pm)
  • Use a harness instead of a collar (doesn't compress the trachea)
  • Avoid intense or prolonged exercise
  • Fresh water available at all times
  • Never leave in unventilated environments

Facial fold cleaning

The folds above the muzzle accumulate moisture and debris, causing bacterial dermatitis if not cleaned daily.

  • Wipe with cotton dampened in warm water daily
  • Dry completely with dry gauze afterward
  • Once a week use chlorhexidine wipes (vet recommendation)
  • Watch for redness, odor or discharge — see the vet

Health: what to monitor

Condition Warning sign What to do
Brachycephalic syndrome Loud snoring, quick fatigue Veterinary consult, consider surgery
Fold dermatitis Redness, odor Rigorous cleaning and topical antifungal
Eye prolapse Emergency — eye pops out Immediate vet — 30-min window
Patellar luxation Sudden limping X-ray and orthopedic evaluation
Obesity Fast weight gain Portion control and light regular activity

Ideal toys for a Pug

Low bite force and small jaw guide the choice. Large or very hard toys are useless.

  • Small plush toys with safe internal squeaker
  • Soft rubber Kong Puppy chewers
  • Small tennis balls
  • Light puzzle toys (for mental engagement)
  • Thin rope for moderate tug-of-war

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Pug do intense exercise?

No. Brachycephalic Syndrome limits respiratory capacity. Prefer short walks (15-20 min) in cool hours and avoid running or exhausting play.

Why does my Pug snore so much?

It's characteristic of the breed due to the flat muzzle. Soft snoring is normal; loud snoring with breathing effort indicates worsening of the syndrome — see the vet.

Can a Pug live in a hot climate?

With great care. Air conditioning on hot days, walks only early morning or evening, and always fresh water. Heat is the main cause of sudden death in the breed.

Do Pugs shed a lot?

Yes. Despite short hair, they shed A LOT year-round, especially during seasonal changes. Brushing 2x a week with soft bristle brushes helps a lot.

How many times a day should I feed a Pug?

Adult: 2 meals. The breed gains weight easily and excess weight worsens breathing. Weigh the food rigorously.
