Persian Cat: everything about the breed
The Persian is one of the oldest cat breeds in the world, with written records since 1600 in Persia (now Iran). Its striking feature — long and dense fur — is the result of a natural mutation preserved by selection. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, breeding favored increasingly flat muzzles (peke-face type), which brought respiratory and ocular problems.
Daily coat care
The Persian's fur doesn't shed on its own, forming painful mats if not brushed. It's the highest-maintenance breed for hair among cats.
- Brushing with metal bristle brush 10 minutes/day
- Bath every 4-6 weeks with feline shampoo
- 'Lion' cut in summer eases maintenance
- Daily eye cleaning with moist gauze (tear stains)
- Monthly nail trim

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Persians hypoallergenic?
No. Quite the opposite — one of the breeds that most causes allergic reactions due to the long fur that carries Fel d 1 proteins around.
Can Persians have respiratory allergies?
Yes, common due to the flat muzzle. Keeping the environment dust-free, smoke-free and well ventilated helps a lot.
Do I really need to brush every day?
Yes. Skipping brushing for 3-4 days already forms mats that need to be cut. A poorly brushed Persian is a suffering cat.
Do Persians get along with children?
Yes, but they prefer older children (7+) who respect their space. Doesn't like excessive noise or being carried forcefully.
What is the Persian's life expectancy?
Between 12 and 17 years. Persians with kidney care from young age tend to live in the upper part of this range.
