French Bulldog: everything about the breed

The French Bulldog emerged in France in the 19th century from crossing small English Bulldogs with local terriers. Its bat ears and gentle temperament made it a Paris favorite and then a worldwide sensation. As with any brachycephalic breed, it has respiratory limitations requiring careful management and avoidance of overheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can French Bulldog live in hot climate?

With extreme care. Air conditioning is essential on days above 25°C/77°F. Overheating can be fatal within minutes due to brachycephalic syndrome.

Why does French Bulldog need C-section?

The large heads of puppies don't fit through the narrow birth canal of the female. Almost 100% of births are surgical, which raises reproduction and puppy cost.

Is French Bulldog good for apartments?

Excellent. Barks little, needs moderate exercise (30 min/day) and loves being home. One of the best small breeds for urban apartments.

How much does a French Bulldog cost?

In the US, between $2,000 and $8,000 depending on lineage and color. Beware of very low prices — may indicate a kennel without genetic care.

Do French Bulldogs swim?

No. Their anatomy (large head, compact body) prevents swimming — they drown easily. Never leave near a pool without a dog life vest.
