Siamese Cat: everything about the breed

Originally from ancient Siam (now Thailand), the Siamese is one of the oldest recorded feline breeds — present in Thai manuscripts from the 14th century. Its striking 'colorpoint' pattern with light body and dark extremities results from a temperature-sensitive gene: cooler body areas develop darker pigmentation.

Energy level High
Bite force Medium

Unique personality

Siamese is famous for vocalization — 'talks' to owners using varied meows in tone and volume. Not the breed for those who want a quiet cat.

Extremely sociable and dependent. Suffers from solitude and develops destructiveness or depression if left alone for many hours.

Can Siamese stay alone all day?

Not recommended. Suffers greatly from solitude. Ideal to have another cat or dog for company, or pet sitter during the day.

Do Siamese shed a lot?

Less than long-haired cats but still shed. Short coat falls year-round in moderate quantity. Weekly brushing helps.

Why do Siamese have blue eyes?

Genetic trait linked to the colorpoint gene. All purebred Siamese have intense blue eyes — if green or yellow appears, probably mixed.

What's the Siamese life expectancy?

12 to 20 years, one of the longest-lived feline breeds. Many exceed 18 years with proper care.
